In late season 2 or early season 3, it transformed from the tornado 2, if I remember correctly. I'll have to rewatch those episodes.

The jet was called the Hyper Tornado; it was a transformed version of the biplane Tornado, apparently engineered by Chuck Thorndyke. (The logic was that Tails might need a jet, since they had to leave the X behind.) I believe that was during the last episode of season 2.

Hyper tornado its called. So does that mean its stronger than the X-tornado, or are they both about the same? I think I might try to incorporate it into my Sonic X series project somehow

That's a good idea. Which of the planes do you think would win in a dogfight: Hyper Tornado or X-Tornado?

My bets are on the X-tornado, for it also has a Walker Mode and three different weapons, a chaingun, a homing missile launcher, and a beam cannon. The Hyper Tornado does have its advantages with speed and its Ring Tunnel Emitter. I think that the Hyper Tornado isn't as good , though I bet it could outdo the Pink Wind.

The X-Tornado's walker mode wouldn't be that useful against another plane (though it does have a third configuration, only used once, that might indeed give it a massive advantage). I see the Hyper Tornado as a sort of short-range, agile fighter, while the X is more robust and has a range of functions.

A well-aimed air-to-air missile from Tails in the X-Tornado could take down any hostile air units except for frigates, cruisers, and capital ships. Although both fighters served the Sonic Heroes well against the Metarex.

It was the one where the engines become a pair of arms with a sword, and it switches propulsion systems. He used it on the Egg Carrier, but it had the downfall of lacking proper landing gear then. By the way, What what do you see the Pink Wind and Yellow Wind as in capabilities Twilight? I personally think they are the weakest of the ships, but are definitely very high performance and could easily last a large battle more than an ordinary fighter would.

As starfighters go (an uneven standard at best, given their popularity in science fiction), those two seem fairly generic; you might call them "the Mario" of Sonic X's planes. "Generic" is by no means inferior; they just don't seem to be very specialized. I would guess that Tails built them to work with the Typhoon, whatever the situation.
Of course, this still puts them several steps above today's planes, and they can certainly perform well where it counts.
