While today's Sonic games are not terrible, we may have to face the fact that SEGA is slowly drifting away from its classic Sonic elements, both side scroller and the 3-d Games. What old element do you miss most? I miss Chao Gardens. ALOT. I also miss that catchy speed up jingle :(

I miss the old console wars. There was a time when Sega gave Nintendo some real competition, forcing both companies to make better and better games. (It's thanks to that contest that we have Sonic at all.) After the Dreamcast fell through, Sega was forced to partner with Nintendo to stay in business, and ever since, the Big N has been declining. Sony and Microsoft are in a completely separate league; Nintendo now owns most of the market for its type of games, allowing them to slack off somewhat and get by on just decent. It's the same thing Disney was doing for about ten years before they met Pixar: selling stuff partly based on their name. Some of my favorite franchises (Star Fox, for instance) got visibly worse after that.
Luckily, it looks like the games might be on the rise again; Super Mario Galaxy and now Sonic Unleashed seem to be regaining strength after the respective failures of Sunshine and Secret Rings. There may yet be hope.

I enjoyed Sunshine! But what I do miss are both the Chao Gardens as Kyle mentioned, and the Zones. I would have greatly prefered Apatos(?) Day Zone to just plain Apatos(?) day.
As for nintendo, I miss the Mother series, (My Pic as of now is the main char from Mother 1) and If you haven't played the Mother series play it now.
Moreover, I miss a lot of things from games today, like Crash Bandicoot, back in the day, sure it may have gotten more humorous (Cortex actually said that you "can't has Cheeseburger" in Mind Over Mutant) which I think is a plus, but the bnew game play on the other hand has got me bummed.
I also happen to miss the days back wen Rare worked with Nintendo (I'm not complaining just reminicing) and when Spyro the dragon was cool (before the PS2 came out)
Star Fox 64 is the ONLY StarFox game I'll play, because in my opinion it's the best in the series. (I hated St4rf0x Adventures)
But I can't say that all the new stuff is worse than the old. Banjo Kazooie Nuts n' Bolts is one of my favourite games, as well as all of the Metroid Prime series, Crash Mind Over Mutant was Ok as well. But, the Nostalgic feel you get from playing those great games of old, (Banjo-tooie, Donkey Kong Country 2, possibly Zelda [I'm not a big fan]) just seems better to most. Hopefully someday things will go back to that calibur in the future (Like Megaman 9 and Mario Luigi 3 [it's real])
And Nintendo and Sega still have their "Rivalled" moments, like in Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (Or the sequel Mario and Sonic at the Olypic Winter Games) where they competed with eachother, even if it wasn't INTENSE like Kyle said.
I also need to point out the decline in the Rayman Series as of late, (Raving Rabbids 2? Did we really need a sequel?) I miss the older games with the lums and Razor Beard, even Rayman arena was cool! (You wouldn't believe how much I played that Game!)
So after turning a simple post into an essay, I'm gonna end it off here. that's right It's Over.
Classic Pac-Man was addicting too... ~Avery
If only you'd out that much effort into your work. ~Kev
Avery's top eleven favourite games: (Because I like to go one beyond) 11.Stinkoman 20X6 10.Crash Bandicoot 3 9.Banjo-Tooie 8.Paper Mario 2 (TTYD) 7.Cave Story 6.Sonic Adventure 2 Battle 5.Pokemon Platinum 4.Mother 3 3.Super Smash Brothers Brawl 2.Crash Team Racing 1.Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
Huzzah! ~Avery

Incidentally, Star Fox Adventures was a product of the Rare-Nintendo era. But then, so was DK64, which was awesome. Star Fox Assault wasn't bad, but Namco made that, not Nintendo. And Command... I won't even go into that.
I don't think Olympic Games really counts, seeing as it was one of the most gimmicky, thrown-together collections of mini-games I've ever played. If you want mini-games, Mario Party is the way to go.
