I think he cant swim as for reason: 1)in sonic x ep 9 he jump into the water to save amy 2)he once went into the ocean to look for the chaos emerald 3)amy said a phrase before and is(It must because he hate water,he did not want to go to the ocean because he can't swim So that mean sonic can't swim.

I agree with you sonic as also there is a ep which show sonic can't swim. The ep is 55 as one of the metraxe catch sonic and throw him into the sea.I will tell you more about it.It started from(with a small return in Chris’ world where his/her parents and his friends worry because of his hasty departure. Finally, they decide to trust Chris, and they know he knows what he is doing. Return to our heroes who move towards the Water planet. According to Knuckles and the reaction of the Master Emerald, a Chaos Emerald is hidden there. In front of a so evocative name, our notices immense desert plains. Everyone decides to leave by submarine in order to find proper ground where they can begin research of the Chaos Emerald. In order to help Sonic with his “water problem,” Chris stays back. Cream, Tails, Amy, Cosmo and Knuckles are found on their side on a beach and start to seek the Chaos Emerald while Sonic and Chris emerge in front of a strange infrastructure. Apparently, the planet is not uninhabited. Some of the inhabitants of the planet are Metallix robots who have changed their metabolism in order to adapt to their new environment. Additionally, they are not a friendly bunch. Sonic starts to fight whereas Chris advises him not to. But, Sonic tells Chris to get to safety and he continues to fight alone. But Sonic is caught by surprise when the leader of the Metallix captures Sonic in a net. Chris flees quickly to tell the others, and he promises Sonic he will return. Returning to the Typhoon, Chris quickly tries to contact Tails and after a while, Chris states that it would be better if to plan an emergency plan rather than leaving Sonic there. Amy also finds out about the situation as well. Feeling the occasion to put herself forward near Sonic, Amy decides to rescue Sonic on her own, and Tails also prepares a plan to find Amy with Tornado. Unfortunately, Chris is left alone and is not permitted to come so he decides to take a shower. Chris plunges into a depression by wondering whether, it was worth always trying to follow and assist Sonic in his time of need and for Sonic to do the same for him. He wondered if not being able to help, which made him feel useless, was the cause of many problems. Chris felt even more depressed thinking Cheese (or Chao in general) were better than he was. But he thought of everything that he achieved during those 6 years. Meanwhile, Amy finally arrived at the base where Sonic is retained prisoner. Sonic is hung at the end of a cane with giant fishing and is used as soft food to the Metarex Chief. Fortunately, Amy tries to come to Sonic’s aid while Tails travels on board X-Tornado to recover Amy. After a long fight, Tails discovers Amy and Sonic and they all try to fly away from the Metallix. Nevertheless, the robots do not give up as of yet and their chief threw several harthingys in their direction. Although they did not damage the X-Tornado, it cuts the fishing rod Sonic was still hanging on, sending Sonic diving into the water! However, Chris comes to the rescue and sends a strange pair of shoes to him enabling him to walk on water. The combat finishes and they have now released the planet from the control of the Metallix. A little later water starts to be withdrawn, revealing the cities of the old age of planet that was absorbed by the Metallix. On their side, Cheese, Cream, Knuckles and Cosmo finally find the Chaos Emerald. Sonic, finally having the ability to walk on land again, sprints and is thankful for the help his friends provided him with that day. That all.

Sonic, I know that this is all the same person; you're just talking to yourself. Stick to one account.

Well if you saw episode one, after sonic outran Sam Speed's car, he fell in Chris's pool and couldn't get out, merely having to hold his breath until Chris rescued him. It shows you that Sonic isn't afraid of water, he just can't swim.

I read an interview from a creator (or something similar) of Sonic's saying that Sonic X gives the wrong idea. Sonic isn't afraid of the water -in fact, the beach is supposed to be a favorite spot of his.

or maybe he just has a problem moving in water, therefore giving him the fear of drowning. so yeah that would make sence.

I agree with CSD's statement, its not fear, he may just have a hard time swimming.
But its still fun to make fun of his possible fear of water, even if its not likely.

He's not scared of water. Look at all those water missions you must do in the games. He sunk as a brick stone.
In Sonic X the first episode, Sonic landed in the Throndyke's (I hope I spelled it right but I think I haven't.) pool, he wasn't scared, he didn't freaked out when he landed in it. He was just annoyed because of it.
Conclusion: He can't swim.
